APARTMENT, 2023
Mixed media installation: shattered ceramic sculpture, single-channel video (HD, color, silent, 2’40”) Dimensions variable
Apartments are often demolished and erased under the name of “reconstruction,” whether due to their aging condition or in the name of regional economic development. As the most common form of housing in South Korea, the apartment can no longer endure solely as a “home” in itself. Yet, for someone, a building whose exterior value has diminished is still a place layered with family memories and the ground upon which personal identity has been formed.
Even if the tangible apartment disappears, the intangible emotions, memories, and identities tied to it remain alive.
This work seeks to present, through the dual mediums of video and sculpture, the tension between the vanishing physical structure and the enduring value of invisible memory.
